1762-OW8 Allen-Bradley MicroLogix Relay Output Module
The Allen-Bradley 1762-OW8 is an eight-point AC/DC relay output expansion module. It belongs to the MicroLogix 1200 series. Moreover, it also supports the MicroLogix 1100 and 1400 controllers. This module adds discrete output capacity to a MicroLogix control system. It suits clean, dry industrial sites rated Pollution Degree 2. In addition, it mounts on a DIN rail or a panel. Two isolated groups split the outputs: channels 0 to 3 and channels 4 to 7. Each point handles 2.5 A continuously. As a result, the module drives contactors, relay coils, solenoids, pilot lamps, alarms and similar discrete loads. It also sends RUN and START signals to VFDs and motor starters. The module connects to the controller bus with a ribbon cable. However, you must add it to the hardware configuration before use.

Environmental and EMC notes: The relay contacts stay isolated between groups. Therefore, this limits cross-talk between channels. Also, the 10 ms delay filters short switching noise. Use end anchors on DIN rails in high-vibration areas. Choose panel mounting for heavy shock. Meanwhile, keep debris out of the module during installation.
Installation Guide
- Mount the module within six positions of the host power supply.
- Clip it onto the DIN rail, or fasten it to a panel.
- Fit end anchors on both sides for high-vibration sites.
- Connect the ribbon cable to the base controller or the next module.
- Wire group 0 (channels 0 to 3) and group 1 (channels 4 to 7) as separate circuits.
- Check terminal torque and keep metal chips out of the housing.
- Add the module to the hardware configuration before you power up.
Commissioning and Maintenance
Commissioning is fast because the module needs no calibration. Check each output with a meter in both states. Also, watch the 10 ms response on fast loads. Maintenance is simple. Inspect terminals for loose wires, and clean dust from the vents. Replace the module as a unit if a relay fails. Thanks to the rackless design, spare-part stock stays low. Swapping a module takes minutes and needs no re-wiring of other slots.
Compatibility
The 1762-OW8 works with MicroLogix 1100, 1200 and 1400 controllers. It fits any free slot in a Bulletin 1762 expansion rack. In addition, it shares the bus with other 1762 I/O modules. It suits retrofit work on legacy MicroLogix systems. For this reason, it also serves as a drop-in spare for obsolete output modules.
Typical Applications
- Contactor and relay coil switching
- Solenoid valve and actuator control
- VFD RUN and START signals
- Motor starter control
- Pilot lamps and indicator panels
- Alarm annunciators, sirens and horns
- Discrete signaling in packaging, material handling and water treatment lines
Diagnostics
The module reports through the controller. Use the status indicators and the programming software to check output states. During startup, force outputs one by one. Then compare commanded and measured states to find a failed relay or a wiring fault. Because the two groups are isolated, you can split a fault to one half of the module.
