Frequently Asked Questions
What is a 20mA TTY interface?
It is an old serial standard. It uses a current loop. And it is very good for long wires and noisy places.
Can I connect a modern USB device to it?
No. You need a separate USB-to-20mA converter. This module only speaks the 20mA TTY language.
What does “passive” and “active” cable length mean?
“Active” (100m) means the module powers the loop. “Passive” (1000m) means an external device provides power.
Is the 3964(R) protocol common?
Yes. It is a common Siemens serial protocol. It is good for safe and reliable machine-to-machine chat.
What is a typical wiring mistake?
Connecting the + and – wires backwards on the current loop. This stops all communication. Always check polarity.
Should You Buy This Module?
- You have an S7-300 PLC needing a serial port.
- Your old device only has a 20mA TTY port.
- You need to print from your PLC to an old printer.
- Your cables are long or in an electrically noisy area.
- You want a simple, reliable serial connection.
