1606-XLERED | Dual-Input Diode Redundancy Module | Oiltech Controls Review
The 1606-XLERED is an Allen-Bradley Bulletin 1606-XL diode decoupling module. It takes two DC feeds and isolates them through diode paths. Each input carries 10 A, and the shared output handles 20 A nominal. Because the two paths never back-feed, one supply can fail without pulling down the rail. The trade-off is a 780 mV nominal drop, so trim the source supplies upward. Engineers use it to build 1+1 redundancy without a bus controller.
Bulletin 1606-XL Redundancy Role
- Sits downstream of two supplies, not inside a single unit
- Diode decoupling only, so no active load sharing
- No bus port, so it stays outside network diagnostics
- Narrow 32 mm body leaves room for more rails
- DIN rail clip with enclosure mount option
- Pairs with 1606-XLE or XLS feeds in the same panel

Professional FAQ
Q: Do I need to raise both supply setpoints for the 780 mV drop?
A: Yes, in most cases. Set each source near 24.8 V so the load sees about 24 V after the diode. Check that downstream devices accept the higher idle rail.
Q: Can I parallel the two inputs from one supply for more current?
A: It is allowed, but you gain little. Each path still carries 10 A, and the drop stays. For higher current, move to a larger redundancy frame.
Q: Does this module share load evenly between supplies?
A: No. Diode decoupling passes current from the higher source first. The second supply idles until the first drops. That is normal for diode-OR designs.
Q: What happens on a short circuit at the output?
A: Output current can reach 25 A briefly. Check the upstream supply current limit and fuse the load branch. Long faults should trip the source, not the diode.
Q: Is storage temperature a risk if I stock spares?
A: The 1606-TD002H table omits it. Keep spares in a dry room between -25 and +55 °C to stay safe. Ask us for the latest datasheet before long storage.
