1766-L32BXBA Allen-Bradley MicroLogix 1400 Controller, 32 I/O
The 1766-L32BXBA is a 32-point MicroLogix 1400 controller from Allen-Bradley. It runs on 24 V DC external power. The I/O mix is dense for its size: 12 fast 24 V DC inputs, 8 normal 24 V DC inputs, 6 relay outputs, 3 fast DC outputs, 3 normal DC outputs, plus 4 analog inputs and 2 analog outputs. Relay contacts switch 5 to 125 V DC and 5 to 264 V AC. The unit carries 20 KB of user memory with battery-backed RAM. A built-in real-time clock supports time-based logic. Three communication ports are on board: one isolated RS232/RS485 combo, one non-isolated RS232, and one Ethernet port. The Ethernet port runs a web server and email functions. You can add up to seven 1762 expansion modules.

Port and Protocol Map
- Port 1: isolated RS232/RS485 combo. Use it for DF1, DH485, MODBUS RTU, DNP3 or ASCII.
- Port 2: non-isolated RS232. Good for a local programming terminal or a panel HMI.
- Ethernet: EtherNet/IP for PLC-to-PLC and HMI links. MODBUS TCP/IP for third-party gateways. DNP3 for utility and SCADA sites.
- Web server and email run over Ethernet without extra hardware.
I/O Grouping at a Glance
- Fast inputs: 12 points for encoders, proximity sensors and high-speed event capture.
- Normal inputs: 8 points for pushbuttons, limit switches and standard signaling devices.
- Relay outputs: 6 volt-free contacts for mixed AC/DC loads.
- DC outputs: 3 fast plus 3 normal for coils, lamps and solid-state relays.
- Analog: 4 voltage inputs and 2 voltage outputs for setpoints and feedback.
Installation and Environment
- Power the unit from a stable 24 V DC supply. Size the supply for the 15 A inrush.
- Mount on DIN rail or a panel. Keep the enclosure open and ventilated.
- Use the controller only in clean, dry areas with Over Voltage Category II circuits.
- Fit the 1746-BA battery to keep RAM and clock data through power loss.
- Add the controller and each 1762 module to the hardware configuration first.
Oiltech Controls’s Insight
- This model is a good fit when you need relay, DC and analog I/O in one box. It cuts panel wiring and saves a slot.
- The combo serial port plus Ethernet covers most legacy and modern links. You rarely need an external gateway.
- Count the 15 A inrush before you pick a power supply. Undersized supplies cause random resets at power-up.
- Plan the seven 1762 slots early. Analog and relay modules draw different bus current.
Oiltech Controls Review
- Every 1766-L32BXBA is bench-tested before dispatch. We check all ports, relay contacts and analog channels.
- Units ship within 24 to 28 hours of order confirmation.
- Couriers: FedEx, UPS and DHL.
- All units carry a 12-month warranty.
- Ask for test records and firmware version before you order.
Best Fit Equipment
- Small conveyor and packaging lines
- Pump and valve control skids
- Water and wastewater stations
- PanelView HMI and SCADA links
- Remote monitoring over Ethernet or DNP3
- Retrofit of older MicroLogix 1200 panels
FAQ
Q: Does the 1766-L32BXBA support analog control out of the box?
A: Yes. It has 4 voltage inputs and 2 voltage outputs at 12-bit. You do not need an extra analog module for basic setpoint and feedback loops.
Q: How many expansion modules can I add?
A: Up to seven 1762 modules. Check bus current draw per module before you fill all slots.
Q: Can it talk to a third-party SCADA system?
A: Yes. Use MODBUS TCP/IP or DNP3 over Ethernet, or MODBUS RTU on the serial port. Most SCADA packages support both.
Q: What should I verify on a used controller?
A: Ask for port test results, relay contact resistance and the firmware revision. Also confirm the battery is present and the RTC keeps time.
Q: Is this model still a good buy for new projects?
A: For small panels with mixed I/O, yes. It is compact and well supported. For larger systems, compare with newer CompactLogix lines first.
